Hola,

Es primavera!!! It's Spring!!!

The end of the year is just around the corner.

Trimester progress report grades are due in a couple of weeks. Any student missing an assessment needs to make the assessment up as soon as possible.

I am going into my last major units.

8th grade: Root Word Unit

Students will be learning the Latin root words and their meanings along with the meanings of the most used prefixes and suffixes. Students will need this basic information to help them in their high school studies.

7th grade: Roman Gods & Godesses

Students will learn about the Roman Gods & Godesses and how the gods fit into the Roman Society.

K-6 grades: 2 Units (Days/Months/Seasons Unit & Reading Unit)

Students have started the Days/Months/Seasons Unit. This unit should be a short unit. Students will finish up with a reading unit.

Cinco de mayo (5th of May)

Cinco de mayo is coming very quickly. Cinco de mayo is a major holiday in Mexico. We will be celabrating the holiday with a pinata activity. I have sent a note home in all grades K-6, the grades that are doing the activity. I have enough empty tissue boxes now. I only need the wrapped candy that the students are to bring in for the pinata.

Please send in wrapped candy with the homeroom teacher's name on the bag. This will help me be able to stuff the correct pinata with the candy.

ACCESS TESTING

Students who are ELL students will be tested in the next couple of weeks. Please make sure your child(ren) get enough sleep and they are attending school. A letter will be sent home to the parents about the upcoming testing.

Well, I believe that is it for now...

Hasta luegeo!

enero: Bienvenidos al ano nuevo!!!

Hola...

Well, school is back. Everyone should be back in the swing of things.

Parents:

Please remind your students to make good choices. Since break, some students have been having a hard time. Students have been in school for half the year and should know the rules by now. If those students do not get their acts together, there will be consequences (write-ups, parent calls, loss of recess, etc.).

Projects: (In Class)

Grades 2-8 are all doing projects. Information on the projects are as follows:

8th graders: Roman Job Project

You will select one of the jobs on the Jobs list in class. Once you have chosen your job, you need to do the following:

Research what kind of duties your job entailed. Write down or jot down notes on lined piece of paper (need to turn in with your project) about your job, what types of materials and equipment did you use, how much did you get paid and how, how would you have dressed, what were your responsibilities, etc.

Write 3 paragraphs (rough and final draft) in the first person (i.e. I went to the forum today. I washed clothing at the river. I used…) about who you are, what kind of work you did, where you did your work, with whom did you do your work or for whom, what kind of equipment you used, etc. The paragraphs are outlining your typical day: who you are, going to work, at your work, leaving your work.
*Reminder: A paragraph has a topic sentence and at least 4 supporting sentences. Make sure you use descriptive words and correct grammar. Use the correct names of the tools and equipment you use.
* Note: Paragraphs need to be typed: 12 font, Times New Roman, double spaced. If you do not have a computer at home and need to use a computer let me know. I will have a sign up sheet for computer use in the classroom.

Draw and color a picture
of yourself doing your job (again, try to be accurate about what you wore, what kind of tools or equipment you had and where you did your job.) The picture must be on 8.5x11 piece of paper, preferably white.

Draw a small icon (3” x 3”) that represents your job in some way. A seal was very important in Roman Society; it showed your work and showed your status. This icon will be your seal. So, you want to be sure that it is appealing and attention-getting.

Reference page: You are to submit a reference page outlining where you received your materials and information in order for you to complete your Project.

Presentation: You will present your project to the class. You will read your paragraphs (summary) of your job. You may bring in equipment, tools, clothing, etc. that may help with your presentation.

For your class, the project is due on: ___________________________________. Late projects will be marked late and will affect your grade.

Please do not hesitate to come see me if you have any questions.

Have Fun!!!

7th graders: Pompeian/Roman House

· Objective: As a group, you will construct a Pompeian/Roman House (domus/ villa/ mansion/ Insula).

· Requirements:
1. Each group is already selected by the teacher.
2. Group Name / Title: Each group will come up with a name for their group (relating to Latin and in Latin).
3. Each group member’s name will be on the bottom of the box (project).
4. Using the box given, each group will construct a Pompeian/Roman House.
Note: Houses must be appropriate to the Pompeian/Roman time period (rooms, mosaics, etc.).
Note: Page 13 in the textbook can help with setting up your house.
5. All rooms/areas/things must be labeled in Latin.
6. The following rooms/things are required to be in your house:
A. atrium
B. cubiculum
C. culina
D. lararium
E. peristylium
F. hortus
G. taberna
H. tablinum
I. ianua
J. triclinium
K. compluvium
L. impluvium
M. latrina

7. Portfolio: Each group will receive a portfolio (folder) to complete. The portfolio is part of the project and must be completed in its entirety. The portfolio is to help you as a group to stay on task, to help you decide the type of house you want and will keep you organized. The portfolio will help organize your group to accomplish your main goal: to finish the project in the time allotted.
8. Summary: Each group must have a 3-4 paragraph summary (in English) describing their house and progress of making the house: What type of house did you make? What’s in your house? Where things are in your house? Why did you make your house this way? What other research did you do to make your house authentic? How did you construct your house? What materials did you use to construct your house? (Who, what, where, when, how)
9. Individual Reflection: Each person will write a reflection piece on the house project and their experience. What did you learn? What did you do? Did you get along with the group? Did you contribute anything important to the project? Were you successful in your goal (finishing your project/etc.)? (Who, what, where, when, how)
10. Grading Rubric: Use the rubrics given to assess your group project and each member.
11. Oral Presentation: You will present your house to the class.

· Group House Project is worth 28 points. The individual reflection will be graded as an individual piece/ grade.

· You will have 3 class periods to work on this assignment. You will present your finished project to the class the 4th class period. Class will vote on the house they like the most.

*Make sure you read the directions completely and you review the grading rubric.

4th-6th grade: Family Tree Project

1. You are making a Family Tree.

2. Brainstorm about your family. Write down all the names of your family that lives with you, your grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. and tell how they are related to you.

3. Decide on who is going to be on your tree. If you have a big family you may want to just do one set of grandparents, your parents and your siblings. If you have a small family you may want to include more of your family: uncles, aunts, cousins, grandparents, etc.

4. You will get a big piece of construction paper. Construct your Family Tree on the piece of construction paper.

5. Picture or Draw: For each person, you need to draw or put a picture of that family member. (I will take just head shots/drawings.)
· If you are drawing your family member, you may want to draw and color them on white paper. Cut them out and put the drawings on the construction paper. This will help prevent major accidents and mistakes.

6. Label each family member by name and in Spanish on how they are related to you (yo = me/I, madre, padre, tio, tia, …).

7. You will have two class periods to work on the project in class.

2-3 grade: Family Collage Project

1. You are making a Family Collage.

2. Brainstorm about your family. Write down all the names your family that lives with you, your grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. and tell how they are related to you.

3. Decide on how you are going to set up your collage. If you have a big family you may want to just do one set of grandparents, your parents and your siblings. If you have a small family you may want to include more of your family: uncles, aunts, cousins, grandparents, etc.

4. You will get a big piece of construction paper. Construct your Family Collage on the piece of construction paper. Remember to decorate your collage with drawings, pictures, words, etc to represent your family.

Pictures/Drawings

Grades 2-6 have a Family Project. There is a requirement for students to have pictures and/or drawings of family members. I want to stress that students should ask their parents about pictures before taking any. Pictures will probably get cut and pasted on to their project; so be informed.

Hola/Ave

Well, things haave been very busy around here. The holidays are here and so is the end of the Trimester.

Grades:

Grades are here. Report cards will be coming out next week. I have been very busy trying to get everyone's grades in the gradebook.

The Middle Schoolers have been very remiss and have been having a hard time turning in their Portfolios. A major note: 7th and 8th graders have a few assessments in their Portfolios. If I do not recieve the Portfolios in to me by Thursday, December 10th, than according to PCA guidelines I must put a 50% for every assessment missing (in order to put grades into the report cards). I have given out Student Reports to those students missing their Portfolios. I have repeatedly announced on announcements for the past week to turn in their Portfolios completed including the last assessment page.

7th & 8th Grade
Seventh and 8th grades are having their end of Stage 1 Test(closed notes) this rotation. The students will have the opportunity to do test corrections this next rotation. Eighth graders will be learning a little more about business (negotium). Trimester bring in a project to be done. I will introduce this soon.

With some of the older classes (5th-6th graders), I want them to be able to describe their familiy and family members. So, I am going to do some basic adjectives.

I am thinking of an arts and crafts project involving a family tree with it being labeled in Spanish. Will keep you informed on this at a later time.

Feliz Navidad:

Christmas is right around the corner. The concerts to are very soon. I will be doing a holiday related rotation on Navidad. Most Hispanic countries are Catholic dominate and celabrate the birth of Christ. It is said the poinsettia, the Christmas flower, comes from the new world (Mexico). I have not decided exactly what activity I will do, but I have a few ideas: cards, snowmen, ornaments, paper string, etc.

That's all for now. I will chat with you in the new year....

Feliz Navidad y Prospero Ano Nuevo!!!! =)

This conversation should have been written in class (finished for homework if not done). Grades 2-3 have done one as a class. The student will be graded on pronunciation correctness. Please help students at home to be ready. I will start pulling students in class in the next couple of rotations.

What's next?

Spanish: The next unit is classroom things and El dia de los muertos.

Latin: Familia (Stage 1)- Chapter 1 Family

Wow, what a lot of info. I do want to point out that I have not recieved my supplies from the parents yet for my room. I have recieve a little bit, but no means as much as I should have. Unfortunately, this will reflect on the things (types of activities) that we will be able to do in Spanish. If you are wondering about what supplies, please read the blog for September and the Parent supply list for Foreign Language on the PCA website.

Well, I think that is about it. Any questions or concerns, please email or call (Ext.207).
Hasta aproxima vez!!!!!
